LIKES:
- His home life.
- His space.
- Playing video games in his room, which is decidedly his and no one else is allowed to bother him there.
- Baseball, baseball averages, Japanese Pro Leagues, High school leagues, ranting about baseball. Being a bona fide baseball nerd.
- Detective novels and other media. And, yes, he's a nerd in more than one area. (Don't be surprised if he knows the sematics behind your graphing calculator or precisely the right code to hack that official website—it's not for evil, he simply "has a good head and a short memory.")
- Guitars. And girls who can play the guitar.
- Microbiology.
- Soba noodles, and maybe just food in general.
- People who can back up their brazen claims.
- As cliched as it will most definitely sound, making people happy. He's a goody-goody, it's his own fault.
- Science and technology.
- Amateur photography. Why does it seem like everyone else has artistic talent except him.
DISLIKES:
- Disappointing others or failing to meet expectations.
- Losing a baseball game. Oh, woe is losing a game.
- Getting anything other than near-perfect marks.
- That he seems to be massively accident prone. Never ask about the many times he's been to the hospital unless you're prepared for a long rant. (Or the flooring amount of times he's gotten lost.)
- Being thrown into the spotlight.
- Pessimists, not for who they are, but because it depresses him to see people with so little ambition.
- Explaining himself.
- Everyone noticing how tall he is—Kato is, without a doubt, tall for your average Japanese freshman in high school at 182cm. He knows. You don't need to stare.
- Boredom and standing still.
- Crowding.
HISTORY:
Or: unlike his charming and darling sister that everyone liked, Kato had difficulty with people—and honestly thought she would just find friends for him forever anyway. His parents were exasperated by his sheer energy, and had to discipline him more than once for doing stupid things. (Like running away when a friend told him to, leaving the house alone at nine at night to catch fireflies, trying to trap "pet" ground squirrels and never failing to hurt himself.) Eventually he came to terms with the idea that he had to listen to adults, because they were "important." Through years of calculated parenting strategy, Kato adopted a philosophy that was actually quite mindful of authority figures. It was a good mindset too, because he was the type of kid who had a natural gift for academia and decided he wanted star stickers on the wall to remind him.
Fifth grade changed his complacent, "I-don't-need-to-talk-because-Ouhi-does-it-and-I'm-shy" attitude when she, to his shock, was not there. It didn't help that even when she was, his guy friends thought hanging out with a girl was stupid, and he didn't want to feel worthless in front of them. Looking for his own foothold instead of always needing to cling to Ouhi, he eventually shrugged her off in favor of the baseball club—and figured she would learn to take it. Things soured between the two unintentionally, due in part to how often he was suddenly out practicing or scouring town. And that he really just wasn't thinking much about it.
His middle school years were rocky because of his status as a (competitive) overachiever who acted "arrogant"—some of his teachers thought he was rudely inattentive, and he still had that sense of thinking other people's rules were worthless. This was half-true. Moreover, he was busy with two sports teams, ranking close to the top of the student body, and still managing to find time to sulk in normal teenage fashion because he never did learn to like people. He was attached to the team, but they annoyed him. After some time, his interest in 'hanging out' dropped back down to nothing. He started experimenting with hacking after watching a tv program on the technique, and has been practicing for the past two years.
It was then that Ouhi began to adopt less than upright behaviors, and, while he knew about her incident with the boys, Kato never was quite able to place what it meant to him. On the one hand, he wanted to kick their asses—he had a duty to, since they had the guts to harass his sister. On the other, he begrudgingly acknowledged there was nothing he could do now. At the least, he knew she was depressed.
Shigayomi's small population eventually made for ugly rumors about Ouhi, and that was perhaps what irritated him most. It made his mother and father uncomfortable, and fights would break out over some of her more questionable behavior either behind closed doors or out in the open. Even if the house wasn't torn apart, there was a distinct divide where he felt that he should accommodate for her "bad attitude." It was as though he was caught in the middle and with the gloom of already needing to consider college, he was stressed both in his own home and at school. Kato resented Ouhi's decisions while getting the sense of how dangerous the line she was toeing might be—there was a chance she could really get caught up in storms. And, to him, it would be her own fault. There is a secret tension over her lifestyle which makes him feel unsympathetic on his worse days.
